Genetic Counseling
As many as 15-20% of ovarian type cancers are now thought to have a genetic component. Genetic counseling is available before, during, or after a person is diagnosed with cancer.
You may be eligible for genetic counseling if you have been diagnosed with epithelial, tubal, and peritoneal cancers, even in the absence of a family history. In addition, women who have been diagnosed with endometrial cancer should undergo systematic and or molecular screening for Lynch syndrome.
For more information on these guidelines please visit Clinical Practice Statement: Genetic Testing for Ovarian Cancer or SGO Clinical Practice Statement: Screening for Lynch Syndrome in Endometrial Cancer
*Peritoneal and fallopian tube cancers should be considered as part of the spectrum of the Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Syndrome.
At Providence Cancer Center, the initial genetic counseling interview is free. Call 907-212-6874 or visit Genetic Counseling for Inherited Cancer.
